Generals enjoy successful, satisfying season
Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School’s Athletic Department recently completed a winter season like no other, yet there are plenty of reasons to acknowledge the 113 student-athletes who participated along with their coaches.
Celebrating the success of the season starts with recognizing the collaborative efforts of the student-athletes, parents, coaches and Athletic Director Craig Genualdo to complete the schedule. There were many ups and downs along the way, yet time and again those involved with the winter athletic programs found a way to navigate an extremely challenging situation. Games were won and lost. In the end, the teams got through it - together - because they continued to keep the experience of the student-athletes at the very center of every situation that presented itself.
Highlights include the 10th Cape Ann League championship for boys basketball in the last 12 years and the fourth consecutive league title for gymnastics. Ryan Monahan (boys basketball) was named the Cape Ann League Player of the Year in the Baker Division, while coach Mike DiMarino earned Coach of the Year honors. The girls basketball team won the CAL Team Sportsmanship Award for its division.
Micah Katz was recognized as the CAL Boys Diver of the Year. Girls hockey player Mackenzie Walles became the first General to captain the co-op team that includes Marblehead, Swampscott and Manchester-Essex.
This school year in general and this athletic season in particular will be remembered for many years to come. In the midst of high anxiety, this season provided an outlet for 113 student-athletes to be great teammates, to compete and to push themselves beyond their comfort zones. The wins were sweeter together and the defeats were softened by each other's company. Congratulations to every team member and coach and a heartfelt thank you to our families for your time, talent and support this past season.
